Abstract
Within the framework of the FONDECYT 1241030 project, the main objective of this thesis is to numerically and experimentally investigate the co-combustion process of ammonia and coal in a hybrid porous medium reactor (HFC) composed of alumina spheres. Experimentally, a cylindrical batch-type reactor was implemented using base coal (BLC), low-sulfur coal (LSC), and mixtures of both. In the reaction zone, three coal-based configurations were comparatively evaluated: BLC, LSC, and BLC+LSC (50% BLC/50% LSC by volume); and three HFC configurations: 70% BLC/30% alumina, 70% LSC/30% alumina, and 35% BLC/35% LSC/30% alumina. All these configurations were operated with a premixed NH₃-air stream at φ = 0.9. The experimental results show that the HFC configurations increase the bed temperature and systematically reduce NOₓ and CO emissions compared with the coal-only cases. The BLC+LSC mixture presented the highest temperature, HFC (70% LSC) reached the highest temperature among the hybrid cases, and HFC (70% BLC) showed the best overall performance by combining high coal consumption with lower emissions. Additionally, a CFD model was proposed in ANSYS Fluent 2024 R2, based on an equivalent porous medium approach considering coal in the reaction zone. The first numerical results show a reasonable agreement with the thermal profile of the reactor, although the emissions are only correctly described in qualitative terms. The parametric studies evidenced the relevance of the equivalence ratio and filtration velocity in the co-combustion process. Finally, the results demonstrate the technical feasibility, at laboratory scale and under batch operation, of the NH₃-coal co-combustion process in a hybrid porous medium reactor, with a mathematical model proposed as a tool for the further development of this research line.
