    Studying proton-proton scattering at 7 TeV, the ALICE collaboration found the unexpected result that the D meson multiplicity increases more than linear as a function of the charged particle multiplicity. We try to understand this behavior using the EPOS3 approach. Two issues play an important role in this context: multiple scattering, in particular its impact on multiplicity fluctuations, and the collective hydrodynamic expansion. These data contain therefore valuable information about very basic features of the reaction mechanism in protonproton collisions.

    Examination of kt-factorization in a Yukawa theory
    (2024-04-01)
    Guiot, B.
    ;
    van Hameren, A.
    We discuss the upper limit, kmax, of the transverse-momentum integration performed in the kt-factorization formula. Based on explicit calculations in the Yukawa theory and the study of seminal papers, we argue that kmax is equal to the factorization scale μF used to factorize the cross section into an off-shell hard coefficient and a universal factor. There is consequently a relation between kmax and the definition of unintegrated parton densities (UPDFs). The use of an inconsistent relation leads potentially to the overestimation of the cross section, which has been observed, e.g., in D-meson production [1]. One of our conclusions is that UPDFs related to collinear PDFs by an integration up to μ ∼ Q, where Q is the hard scale and μ the scale in the collinear PDFs, imply that ∼ Q2. Integrating the transverse-momentum significantly above may result in the overestimation of the cross section. On the opposite, for UPDFs related to the collinear ones by an integration of the transverse momentum up to infinity, any > Q2 is fine.

    Latest results concerning the study of central collisions in 58Ni+48Ca reactions at Elab(Ni)=25 AMeV are presented. The experimental data, collected with the CHIMERA 4π device, have been analyzed in order to investigate the competition among different reaction mechanisms for central collisions in the Fermi energy domain. The method adopted to perform the centrality selection refers to the global variable “flow angle”, that is related to the event shape in momentum space, as it is determined by the eigenvectors of the experimental kinetic-energy tensor. The main features of the reaction products were explored by using different constraints on some of the relevant observables, such as mass and velocity distributions and their correlations. Much emphasis was devoted to the competition between fusion-evaporation processes with subsequent identification of a heavy residue and a prompt multifragmentation mechanism. The reaction mechanism was simulated in the framework of transport theories (dynamical stochastic BNV calculations, followed by sequential SIMON code) and further comparison with dynamical calculations from transport model (QMD, CoMD) are in progress. Moreover, an extension of this study taking into account for the light particles has been envisaged.

    The fusion excitation function of 48Ca + 48Ca has been measured above and well below the Coulomb barrier, thereby largely extending the energy range of a previous experiment down to very low cross sections. This system has a negative Q-value for compound nucleus formation. The fusion cross section decreases steadily below the barrier with no conspicuous change of slope below . Coupled-channels calculations using a Woods–Saxon potential indicate that a large diffuseness parameter is needed to reproduce the sub-barrier cross sections. A close analogy with the case of 36S + 48Ca, with , is pointed out. The sign of the Q-value does not influence fusion cross sections down to the 300–600 nb level.

    Hydrodynamic flow in proton-nucleus collisions at the LHC

    There is little doubt that hydrodynamic flow has been observed in heavy ion collisions at the LHC and RHIC, mainly based on results on azimuthal anisotropies, but also on particle spectra of identified particles, perfectly compatible with hydrodynamic expansions. Surprisingly, in p-Pb collisions one observes a very similar behavior. So do we see flow even in p-Pb? We will try to answer this question.

    J/ψ production at NLO with a scale-dependent color-evaporation model

    Nearly ten years ago, Kang, Ma, Qiu, and Sterman derived an evolution equation for a QQ¯ pair fragmenting into a quarkonium. In this study we explore the consequence of this evolution for the color-evaporation model, focusing on J/ψ transverse-momentum (pt) distributions in proton-proton collisions. We show that, as expected, it softens the spectrum obtained by fixed-order calculations. While next-to-leading-order calculations strongly overestimate data at large pt, ours, including the (approximate) QQ¯ evolution and next-to-leading-order cross sections computed with Madgraph, are in good agreement with experiments. Since our study with the color-evaporation model shows a significant effect of the QQ¯ evolution at large pt, a determination of scale-dependent long-distance-matrix elements of non-relativistic QCD could be necessary. To describe data at small and intermediate pt, we use the kt-factorization approach, and we argue that quarkonia data could help constrain unintegrated parton densities.

    Jets, bulk matter, and their interaction in heavy ion collisions at the LHC

    We discuss a theoretical scheme that accounts for bulk matter, jets, and the interaction between the two. The physical picture of our approach is the following: Initial hard scatterings result in mainly longitudinal flux tubes, with transversely moving pieces carrying the pt of the partons from hard scatterings. These flux tubes constitute eventually both bulk matter (which thermalizes, flows, and finally hadronizes) and jets, according to some criteria based on partonic energy loss. High energy flux tube segments will leave the fluid, providing jet hadrons via the usual Schwinger mechanism of flux-tube breaking caused by quark-antiquark production. But the jets may also be produced at the freeze-out surface. Here we assume that the quark-antiquark needed for the flux tube breaking is provided by the fluid, with properties (momentum, flavor) determined by the fluid rather than the Schwinger mechanism. Considering transverse fluid velocities up to 0.7c, and thermal parton momentum distributions, one may get a "push" of a couple of GeV to be added to the transverse momentum of the string segment. This will be a crucial effect for intermediate pt jet hadrons.

    The population and gamma decay of neutron rich nuclei around 48Ca has been measured at Legnaro National Laboratory with the PRISMA-CLARA setup, using deepinelastic collisions (DIC) on 64Ni, at an energy approximately twice the Coulomb barrier. The reaction properties of the main products are investigated, focusing on total cross sections and angular distributions both integrated in energy and associated to the population of specific excited states. Gamma spectroscopy studies are also performed, giving evidence, for the first time in transfer reactions with heavy ions, of a large spin alignment (~70%), perpendicular to the reaction plane. This makes possible the use of angular distributions and polarization measurements to firmly establish the spin and parity of excited states populated in nucleon transfer channels, as in the case of 49Ca, where candidates for particle-core coupling are investigated. Both reaction and gamma spectroscopy studies demonstrate the relevance of DIC with heavy ions for a detailed investigation of moderately neutron rich systems.

    The aim of this paper is to understand resonance production (and more generally particle production) for different collision systems, namely proton-proton (pp), proton-nucleus (pA), and nucleus-nucleus (AA) scattering at the LHC. We will investigate in particular particle yields and ratios versus multiplicity, using the same multiplicity definition for the three different systems, in order to analyse in a compact way the evolution of particle production with the system size and the origin of a very different system size dependence of the different particles.
