Abstract
This thesis deals with the numerical approximation of a class of stochastic functional differential equations driven by fractional Brownian motion with Hurst parameter H>1/2, where the memory effect is described through an integral kernel. Owing to the fractional nature of the driving noise, the stochastic integrals involved are interpreted pathwise by means of the generalized Riemann–Stieltjes integral, which is defined using tools from fractional calculus. First, the mathematical background required throughout the thesis is presented, including some fundamental properties of fractional Brownian motion, elements of fractional calculus, and the basic theory of the stochastic functional differential equations under consideration. A review of the existing literature on numerical methods for stochastic differential equations and stochastic functional differential equations driven by both standard and fractional Brownian motion is also provided, with particular emphasis on Euler, backward Euler, θ-Maruyama, and Milstein-type schemes. The first original contribution of this thesis consists of the construction and analysis of an explicit Euler scheme for approximating the solution of the equations under study. Under suitable assumptions on the coefficients and the memory term, the consistency and convergence of the method are established. These results constitute the basis of a research article currently submitted for publication. The second contribution concerns the development and analysis of an implicit backward Euler scheme for the same class of equations. It is shown that (...).
