High-momentum configurations of nucleon pairs at short-distance are probed using measurements of the C-12(e, e p) and C-12(e, e pN) reactions (where N is either n or p), at high-Q(2) and x(B) > 1.1. The data span a missing-momentum range of 300-1000 MeV/c and are predominantly sensitive to the transition region of the strong nuclear interaction from a Tensor to Scalar interaction. The data are well reproduced by theoretical calculations using the Generalized Contact Formalism with both chiral and phenomenological nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction models. This agreement suggests that the measured high missing-momentum protons up to 1000 MeV/c predominantly belong to short-ranged correlated (SRC) pairs. The measured C-12(e, e pN)/C-12(e, e p) and C-12(e, e pp)/C-12(e, e pn) cross-section ratios are consistent with a decrease in the fraction of proton-neutron SRC pairs and increase in the fraction of proton-proton SRC pairs with increasing missing momentum. This confirms the transition from an isospin-dependent tensor NN interaction at similar to 400 MeV/c to an isospin-independent scalar interaction at high-momentum around similar to 800 MeV/c as predicted by theoretical calculation. A Bayesian Hierarchical Network Model for Daily Streamflow Ensemble Forecasting
    (2021-09)
    Ossandon, Alvaro
A novel Bayesian Hierarchical Network Model (BHNM) for ensemble forecasts of daily streamflow is presented that uses the spatial dependence induced by the river network topology and hydrometeorological variables from the upstream contributing area between station gauges. Model parameters are allowed to vary with time as functions of selected covariates for each day. Using the network structure to incorporate flow information from upstream gauges and precipitation from the immediate contributing area as covariates allows one to model the spatial correlation of flows simultaneously and parsimoniously. An application to daily monsoon period (July-August) streamflow at three gauges in the Narmada basin in central India for the period 1978-2014 is presented. The best set of covariates include daily streamflow from upstream gauges or from the gauge above the upstream gauges depending on travel times and daily precipitation from the area between two stations. The model validation indicates that the model is highly skillful relative to a null-model of generalized linear regression, which represents the analogous non-Bayesian forecast. The ensemble spread of BHNM accounts for the forecast uncertainty leading to reliable and skillful streamflow predictions.

A bidirectional versatile buck–boost converter driver for electric vehicle applications
    (2021-09)
    Kouro, Samir
This work presents a novel dc-dc bidirectional buck-boost converter between a battery pack and the inverter to regulate the dc-bus in an electric vehicle (EV) powertrain. The converter is based on the versatile buck-boost converter, which has shown an excellent performance in different fuel cell systems operating in low-voltage and hard-switching applications. Therefore, extending this converter to higher voltage applications such as the EV is a challenging task reported in this work. A high-efficiency step-up/step-down versatile converter can improve the EV powertrain efficiency for an extended range of electric motor (EM) speeds, comprising urban and highway driving cycles while allowing the operation under motoring and regeneration (regenerative brake) conditions. DC-bus voltage regulation is implemented using a digital two-loop control strategy. The inner feedback loop is based on the discrete-time sliding-mode current control (DSMCC) strategy, and for the outer feedback loop, a proportional-integral (PI) control is employed. Both digital control loops and the necessary transition mode strategy are implemented using a digital signal controller TMS320F28377S. The theoretical analysis has been validated on a 400 V 1.6 kW prototype and tested through simulation and an EV powertrain system testing.

A causal framework to determine the effectiveness of dynamic quarantine policy to mitigate COVID-19
    (2021-06)

    Michell, Kevin
Since the start of the pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, more than 106 million people have been infected and global deaths have surpassed 2.4 million. In Chile, the government restricted the activities and movement of people, organizations, and companies, under the concept of dynamic quarantine across municipalities for a predefined period of time. Chile is an interesting context to study because reports to have a higher quantity of infections per million people as well as a higher number of polymerize chain reaction (PCR) tests per million people. The higher testing rate means that Chile has good measurement of the contagious compared to other countries. Further, the heterogeneity of the social, economic, and demographic variables collected of each Chilean municipality provides a robust set of control data to better explain the contagious rate for each city. In this paper, we propose a framework to determine the effectiveness of the dynamic quarantine policy by analyzing different causal models (meta-learners and causal forest) including a time series pattern related to effective reproductive number. Additionally, we test the ability of the proposed framework to understand and explain the spread over benchmark traditional models and to interpret the Shapley Additive Explanations (SHAP) plots. The conclusions derived from the proposed framework provide important scientific information for government policymakers in disease control strategies, not only to analyze COVID-19 but to have a better model to determine social interventions for future outbreaks. A Characterization of Some Fano 4-folds Through Conic Fibrations
    (2021-07-18)
    Montero, Pedro
We find a characterization for Fano 4-folds X with Lefschetz defect delta(X) = 3: besides the product of two del Pezzo surfaces, they correspond to varieties admitting a conic bundle structure f : X -> Y with rho(X) - rho(Y) = 3. Moreover, we observe that all of these varieties are rational. We give the list of all possible targets of such contractions. Combining our results with the classification of toric Fano 4-folds due to Batyrev and Sato we provide explicit examples of Fano conic bundles from toric 4-folds with delta(X) = 3.

A comprehensive comparison between shortest-path HARP refinement, SinMod, and DENSEanalysis processing tools applied to CSPAMM and DENSE images
    (2021-11)
    Mura, Joaquin
We addressed comprehensively the performance of Shortest-Path HARP Refinement (SP-HR), SinMod, and DENSEanalysis using 2D slices of synthetic CSPAMM and DENSE images with realistic contrasts obtained from 3D phantoms. The three motion estimation techniques were interrogated under ideal and no-ideal conditions (with MR induced artifacts, noise, and through-plane motion), considering several resolutions and noise levels. Under noisy conditions, and for isotropic pixel sizes of 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm in CSPAMM and DENSE images respectively, the nRMSE obtained for the circumferential and radial strain components were 10.7 +/- 10.8% and 25.5 +/- 14.8% using SP-HR, 11.9 +/- 2.5% and 29.3 +/- 6.5% using SinMod, and 6.4 +/- 2.0% and 18.2 +/- 4.6% using DENSEanalysis. Overall, the results showed that SP-HR tends to fail for large tissue motions, whereas SinMod and DENSEanalysis gave accurate displacement and strain field estimations, being the last which performed the best.

A dynamic flotation model for predictive control incorporating froth physics. Part I: Model development
    (2021-11)
    Navia, Daniel
It is widely accepted that the implementation of model-based predictive controllers (MPC) ensures optimal operation if an accurate model of the process is available. In the case of froth flotation, modelling for control purposes is a challenging task due to inherent process instabilities. Most models for control have only focused on the pulp phase rather than the froth phase, which is usually oversimplified or even neglected. Despite the fact that froth stability can significantly affect the overall performance of flotation cells, there is still a gap in literature regarding flotation models for control purposes that properly include froth physics. In this paper we describe the development of a dynamic flotation model suitable for model predictive control, incorporating equations that describe the physics of flotation froths. Unlike other flotation models for control in the literature, the model proposed here includes important variables related to froth stability, such as bursting rate and air recovery, as well as simplified equations to calculate froth recovery and entrainment. These model equations allow estimating the amount of valuable material reporting to the concentrate, which can be used as a proxy to estimate grade and recovery. Additionally, pulp-froth interface physics was also included in our model, which enables a more accurate prediction of relevant flotation variables. A sensitivity analysis of the parameters showed that two out of seven parameters were highly sensitive. The highly sensitive parameters are the exponential factor n of the equation for the overflowing bubble size, and the constant value a of the equation for the bursting rate. Although the other parameters showed a reasonably lower sensitivity than n and a, the results also revealed that there is a significant difference in the prediction accuracy if the parameters are poorly estimated. Further simulations of important variables for control exhibited a good adaptability to changes in typical variables, such as air and feed flowrates. An analysis of degrees of freedom of the model established that two variables need to be fixed to have a completely determined system. This means that two variables are available for control purposes, which can be air and tailings flowrates (through the manipulation of the respective control valves). This study therefore paves the way for the implementation of a robust dynamic model for flotation predictive control, incorporating important froth phenomena.

A dynamic flotation model for predictive control incorporating froth physics. Part II: Model calibration and validation
    (2021-11)
    Navia, Daniel
Modelling for flotation control purposes is the key stage of the implementation of model-based predicted controllers. In Part I of this paper, we introduced a dynamic model of the flotation process, suitable for control purposes, along with sensitivity analysis of the fitting parameters and simulations of important control variables. Our proposed model is the first of its kind as it includes key froth physics aspects. The importance of including froth physics is that it improves the estimation of the amount of material (valuables and entrained gangue) in the concentrate, which can be used in control strategies as a proxy to estimate grade and recovery. In Part II of this series, experimental data were used to estimate the fitting parameters and validate the model. The model calibration was performed to estimate a set of model parameters that provide a good description of the process behaviour. The model calibration was conducted by comparing model predictions with actual measurements of variables of interest. Model validation was then performed to ensure that the calibrated model properly evaluates all the variables and conditions that can affect model results. The validation also allowed further assessing the models predictive capabilities. For model calibration and validation purposes, experiments were carried out in an 87-litre laboratory scale flotation tank. The experiments were designed as a randomised 32 full factorial design, manipulating the superficial gas velocity and tailings valve position. All experiments were conducted in a 3-phase system (solidliquid-gas) to ensure that the results obtained, as well as the behaviour of the flotation operation, are as similar as possible to those found in industrial flotation cells. In total, six fitting parameters from the model were calibrated: two terms from the equation for overflowing bubble size; three parameters from the bursting rate equation; and the number of pulp bubble size classes. After the model calibration, simulations were performed to validate the predictions of the model against experimental data. The validation results revealed good agreement between experimental data and model predictions of important flotation variables, such as pulp level, air recovery, and overflowing froth velocity. The high accuracy of the predictions suggests that the model can be successfully implemented in predictive control strategies.

A fast converging hybrid mppt algorithm based on abc and p&o techniques for a partially shaded pv system
    (2021-09)
    Kouro, Samir
Among all the conventional maximum power point tracking (MPPT) techniques for a photovoltaic (PV) system that have been proposed, incremental conductance (INC) and perturb and observe (P&O) are the most popular because of their simplicity and ease of implementation. However, under partial shading conditions (PSCs), these MPPT algorithms fail to track the global maximum power point (GMPP) and instead converge into local maximum power points (LMPPs), resulting in considerable PV power loss. This paper presents a new hybrid MPPT technique combining the artificial bee colony (ABC) and P&O algorithms named ABC-P&O. The P&O technique is used to track the MPP under uniform irradiance, and only during irradiance variations is the ABC algorithm employed. The effectiveness of the proposed hybrid algorithm at tracking the GMPP, under both uniform and nonuniform irradiance conditions, was assessed by hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) tests employed by a dc-dc boost converter. Then, the ABC-P&O strategy was applied to obtain the voltage reference for the outer PI control loop, which provided the current reference to the discrete-time sliding-mode current control. The ABC-P&O algorithm has a reasonable computational cost, allowing the use of a commercial, low-priced digital signal controller (DSC) with outer voltage and inner current control loops. Many challenging tests validated that the proposed ABC-P&O technique converges fast to the GMPP with high efficiency and superior performance under different PSCs.

A knowledge-based hybrid approach on particle swarm optimization using hidden markov models
    (2021-06)
    Castro, Carlos
Bio-inspired computing is an engaging area of artificial intelligence which studies how natural phenomena provide a rich source of inspiration in the design of smart procedures able to become powerful algorithms. Many of these procedures have been successfully used in classification, prediction, and optimization problems. Swarm intelligence methods are a kind of bio-inspired algorithm that have been shown to be impressive optimization solvers for a long time. However, for these algorithms to reach their maximum performance, the proper setting of the initial parameters by an expert user is required. This task is extremely comprehensive and it must be done in a previous phase of the search process. Different online methods have been developed to support swarm intelligence techniques, however, this issue remains an open challenge. In this paper, we propose a hybrid approach that allows adjusting the parameters based on a state deducted by the swarm intelligence algorithm. The state deduction is determined by the classification of a chain of observations using the hidden Markov model. The results show that our proposal exhibits good performance compared to the original version.

A learning-based hybrid framework for dynamic balancing of exploration-exploitation: Combining regression analysis and metaheuristics
    (2021-08)
    Castro, Carlos
The idea of hybrid approaches have become a powerful strategy for tackling several complex optimisation problems. In this regard, the present work is concerned with contributing with a novel optimisation framework, named learning-based linear balancer (LB2). A regression model is designed, with the objective to predict better movements for the approach and improve the performance. The main idea is to balance the intensification and diversification performed by the hybrid model in an online-fashion. In this paper, we employ movement operators of a spotted hyena optimiser, a modern algorithm which has proved to yield good results in the literature. In order to test the performance of our hybrid approach, we solve 15 benchmark functions, composed of unimodal, multimodal, and mutimodal functions with fixed dimension. Additionally, regarding the competitiveness, we carry out a comparison against state-of-the-art algorithms, and the sequential parameter optimisation procedure, which is part of multiple successful tuning methods proposed in the literature. Finally, we compare against the traditional implementation of a spotted hyena optimiser and a neural network approach, the respective statistical analysis is carried out. We illustrate experimental results, where we obtain interesting performance and robustness, which allows us to conclude that our hybrid approach is a competitive alternative in the optimisation field.

The generation of energy from renewable sources is a fundamental aspect for the sustainable development of society, and several energy sources such as solar, biomass, biogas, and wind must be used to the maximum to meet existing needs. In Chile, there are villages that are off-grid. A real case study is presented in this research. To meet the needs of this village we have proposed a mathematical optimization model using a CPLEX optimizer to generate the necessary energy power while minimizing the cost of energy (COE). In this study, different scenarios have been evaluated with respect to the existing energy availabilities, for example, in different periods of the year, demonstrated in terms of economic costs, the viability of resources such as biomass and biogas, and the viability of the energy production of wind power given the associated high costs. Finally, the effect of the use of renewable energy in consideration of CO2 emissions is studied in our research.

A model for correcting the pressure drop between two monoliths
    (2021-11)
    Cornejo, Ivan
This paper is concerned with the modeling of the pressure drop through monolith honeycombs. Monolith substrates are promising for the intensification of catalytic processes, especially because of their low back-pressure. There have been several improvements in the modeling of monolith reactors during the last decade, most of them focused on a single substrate configuration, while research in multiple substrates in a single reactor is still sparse. One example is the so-called minor losses , such as those because of the flow entering and leaving a substrate. Both phenomena interact when two monoliths are placed close in series, and the extra losses produced by them may become relevant when relatively short monoliths are used. In this paper, a spatially resolved computational model of monolith channels arranged in series is used to compute the extra pressure drop because of the flow leaving one substrate and entering the next one downstream. Several Reynolds numbers and spacing lengths for the channels between substrates are investigated. According to the results, for close-coupled monoliths, the inlet and outlet effects produce a negligible pressure drop compared to that in a single monolith configuration. This phenomenon can be accounted for by introducing a correction factor. The magnitude of the correction factor depends on the channels Reynolds number, diameter, and spacing length. A model for such a factor is proposed. The model accurately predicts the trend and magnitude of the correction factor.

A model for simultaneous location and coordination of protective devices in radial distribution networks

Upgrading protection schemes in distribution networks can help electric utilities to improve the reliability of their supply. Fuses and reclosers are still the primary protective devices used in distribution grids, and their optimal allocation allows isolating faults with the least number of interrupted customers. However, most models used to select and locate protective devices optimally do not consider their coordination or rescue schemes for the fuses, resulting in unfeasible or impractical solutions. This paper presents a mixed-integer linear program model for the simultaneous selection, localization, and coordination of protective devices (reclosers and fuses), considering the fuses rescue schemes based on electrical criteria. Local reliability indices and economic penalties for violating minimum standards are integrated into the model, thereby providing new decision-making elements. The proposed approach is tested in different distribution networks to showcase its key features. Computational experiments show that the proposed model can satisfactorily handle the trade-off between costs and reliability.

A multistage stochastic lot-sizing problem with cancellation and postponement under uncertain demands
    (2021-05-07)
    Albornoz, Victor
A multistage stochastic capacitated discrete procurement problem with lead times, cancellation and postponement is addressed. The problem determines the procurement of a product under uncertain demand at minimal expected cost during a time horizon. The supply of the product is made through the purchase of optional distinguishable orders of fixed size with delivery time. Due to the unveiling of uncertainty over time it is possible to make cancellation and postponement corrective decisions on order procurement. These decisions involve costs and times of implementation. A model of the problem is formulated as an extension of a discrete capacitated lot-sizing problem under uncertain demand and lead times through a multi-stage stochastic mixed-integer linear optimization approach. Valid inequalities are generated, based on a conventional inequalities approach, to tighten the model formulation. Experiments are performed for several problem instances with different uncertainty information structure. Their results allow to conclude that the incorporation of a subset of the generated inequalities favor the model solution.

A New Acoustic-Based Approach for Assessing Induced Adulteration in Bovine Milk
    (2021-03)
    Ardila, Jorge
Milk is an important dietary requirement for many populations due to its high nutritional value. However, increased demand has also made it prone to fraudulent activity. In this sense, scientists have sought to develop simple, low-cost, and portable techniques to achieve quality control of milk in industry and farms as well. This work proposes a new instrumentation system based on acoustic propagation and advanced signal processing techniques to identify milk adulteration by industrial contaminants. A pair of transmitter-receiver low-cost piezoelectric transducers, configured in a pitch-catch mode, propagated acoustic waves in the bovine milk samples contaminated with 0.5% of sodium bicarbonate, urea, and hydrogen peroxide. Signal processing approaches such as chromatic technique and statistical indexes like the correlation coefficient, Euclidian norm and cross-correlation square difference were applied to identify the contaminants. According to the presented results, CCSD and RMSD metrics presented more effectiveness to perform the identification of milk contaminants. However, CCSD was 2.28 x 10(5) more sensitivity to distinguish adulteration in relation to RMSD. For chromatic clustering technique, the major selectivity was observed between the contamination performed by sodium bicarbonate and urea. Therefore, results indicate that the proposed approach can be an effective and quick alternative to assess the milk condition and classify its contaminants.

One of the main tools for monitoring the condition of high voltage equipment is the measurement of partial discharges (PD). The electromagnetic (EM) radiation originated from this degradation phenomenon can be captured by various types of ultra-high frequency (UHF) antennas carefully designed and optimised for specific frequency bands. However, the presence of environmental noise may limit the use of this technique. Different types of monopole antennas normally used in UHF PD measurement have been evaluated in order to validate the performance of a novel separation technique of EM sources. Accordingly, a new separation technique based on the energy ratio of the captured signals was developed, considering noise interferences. The results revealed that the new technique allows an adequate separation, even when three sources act simultaneously.

A Novel Demand Response Strategy for Sizing of Hybrid Energy System with Smart Grid Concepts
    (2021)
    Abdelhamid, Mohamed
The sizing problem of the hybrid energy system (HES) is a crucial issue especially in rural communities because any wrong results can mislead the decision makers for building the new HES. Due to the intermittent nature of the renewable energy sources (RES) such as wind and PV, there will be a need for a high storage system and/or a standby diesel engine, which increase the investment, required, and increases the cost of energy (CoE). The use of smart grid concepts like the demand response (DR) using dynamic tariff can improve the system performance, enhance the stability, reduces the size and investments of HES components, reduces the customers bills, and increases the energy providers profits. The DR strategy will allow the customers to share the responsibility of the HES stability with the energy providers to maintain the stability of the HES. The DR strategies should be selected to ensure the balance between the available RES and the load requirements. In this article, a novel DR strategy is introduced to model the required change in the tariff with the battery state of charge and its charging/discharging power. The novel DR strategy is used in the sizing of the HES based on techno-economic objectives using three different soft computing optimization techniques. This article introduces modeling and simulation of the smart grid integrated with hybrid energy systems to supply a standalone load for a rural site in the north of Saudi Arabia. The sizing of the HES is built based on minimizing the CoE and the loss of load probability. The novel DR strategy introduced in this article reduced the size of the HES compared to the fixed load technique by 20.66%. The results obtained from this novel strategy proved its superiority in the sizing and operation stage of the HES.

A novel learning-based binarization scheme selector for swarm algorithms solving combinatorial problems
    (2021-11)
    Castro, Carlos
Currently, industry is undergoing an exponential increase in binary-based combinatorial problems. In this regard, metaheuristics have been a common trend in the field in order to design approaches to successfully solve them. Thus, a well-known strategy includes the employment of continuous swarm-based algorithms transformed to perform in binary environments. In this work, we propose a hybrid approach that contains discrete smartly adapted population-based strategies to efficiently tackle binary-based problems. The proposed approach employs a reinforcement learning technique, known as SARSA (State-Action-Reward-State-Action), in order to utilize knowledge based on the run time. In order to test the viability and competitiveness of our proposal, we compare discrete state-of-the-art algorithms smartly assisted by SARSA. Finally, we illustrate interesting results where the proposed hybrid outperforms other approaches, thus, providing a novel option to tackle these types of problems in industry.

A Novel Simplified Implementation of Finite-Set Model Predictive Control for Power Converters
    (1905-07-13)
    Pulido, Esteban
This article presents a novel simplified method to implement the finite set - model predictive control technique for photovoltaic generation systems connected to the ac network. This method maintains the advantages of the conventional finite set - model predictive control, such as fast response, simple implementation, and easy understanding; but it also eliminates the use of a cost function and hence the weighting factors, instead, it finds the optimal operating state directly from the model and the discrete number of valid states of the converter. Although the proposed algorithm does not compute a cost function, it is able to select the inverter state that minimizes the tracking error by using a hexagonal convergence region. The main advantage of this technique is to reduce the computational cost in 43% of the algorithm that selects the best state, presenting a simple and complete algorithm without compromising the predictive control performance. The proposed algorithm properly operates under various conditions such as changes in the network frequency and changes in the system parameters.
