Publication 3D characterization of electrical tree structures(2019-02-01); ; ;Angulo, Alejandro; ;Rowland, Simon M. ;Iddrissu, IbrahimBradley, Robert S.Electrical trees are one of the main mechanisms of degradation in solid polymeric insulation leading to the failure of high voltage equipment. They are interconnected networks of hollow tubules typically characterized from two-dimensional (2D) projections of their physical manifestation. It is shown that complete characterization requires a three-dimensional (3D) imaging technique such as X-ray computed tomography (XCT). We present a comprehensive set of parameters, quantitatively characterizing two types of tree topology, conventionally known as bush- and branchtype. Fractal dimensions are determined from 3D models and from 2D projections, and a simple quantitative relationship is established between the two for all but dense bush trees. Parameters such as number of nodes, segment length, tortuosity and branch angle are determined from tree skeletons. The parameters most strongly indicative of the differences in the structure are the number of branches, individual channel size, channel tortuosity, nodes per unit length and fractal dimension. Studying two stages of a bush tree's development showed that channels grew in width, while macroscopic parameters such as the fractal dimension and tortuosity were unchanged. These parameters provide a basis for tree growth models, and can shed light on growth mechanisms.Scopus© Citations 38 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Publication A comparison of inductive sensors in the characterization of partial discharges and electrical noise using the chromatic technique(2018-04-01); ; ;de Castro, Bruno Albuquerque; ;Ulson, José Alfredo Covolan ;Muhammad-Sukki, FirdausBani, Nurul AiniPartial discharges (PDs) are one of the most important classes of ageing processes that occur within electrical insulation. PD detection is a standardized technique to qualify the state of the insulation in electric assets such as machines and power cables. Generally, the classical phase-resolved partial discharge (PRPD) patterns are used to perform the identification of the type of PD source when they are related to a specific degradation process and when the electrical noise level is low compared to the magnitudes of the PD signals. However, in practical applications such as measurements carried out in the field or in industrial environments, several PD sources and large noise signals are usually present simultaneously. In this study, three different inductive sensors have been used to evaluate and compare their performance in the detection and separation of multiple PD sources by applying the chromatic technique to each of the measured signals. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Publication A new technique for separation of partial discharge sources and electromagnetic noise in radiofrequency measurements using energy ratios of different antennas(2021-06-01); ;Cerda-Luna, Matias; ;Albuquerque de Castro, Bruno ;Andreoli, André LuizCevallos, BenjaminOne of the main tools for monitoring the condition of high voltage equipment is the measurement of partial discharges (PD). The electromagnetic (EM) radiation originated from this degradation phenomenon can be captured by various types of ultra-high frequency (UHF) antennas carefully designed and optimised for specific frequency bands. However, the presence of environmental noise may limit the use of this technique. Different types of monopole antennas normally used in UHF PD measurement have been evaluated in order to validate the performance of a novel separation technique of EM sources. Accordingly, a new separation technique based on the energy ratio of the captured signals was developed, considering noise interferences. The results revealed that the new technique allows an adequate separation, even when three sources act simultaneously.Scopus© Citations 7 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Publication Analysis of partial discharges in electrical tree growth under very low frequency (vlf) excitation through pulse sequence and nonlinear time series analysis(2020-01-01) ;Donoso, Pablo; ;Orellana, LuisElectrical treeing is the main degradation mechanism in high voltage polymeric insulation, that leads to power system plant failure and the loss of electricity supply. Electrical trees grow under partial discharge (PD) activity, which can be measured and analyzed to understand and characterize electrical tree growth. In this work, PD measurements were analyzed for electrical trees grown in epoxy resin needle-plane samples under very low frequency (VLF, 0.1 Hz) voltage excitation. VLF is interesting as it is used for testing power cables and other high capacitance insulation loads. However, more experience and new methods are needed for PD interpretation. PDs were studied using two tools: pulse sequence analysis (PSA) and nonlinear time series analysis (NLTSA) from dynamic system theory. PSA was treated here as a particular case of NLTSA since their constructions are similar in their mathematical treatment. The experimental results showed that electrical trees grown at VLF had branch-type structure and times to breakdown about fifty times larger than samples aged at industrial frequency. PSA plots were compared with 2D projections of state-space trajectories that represent the dynamics of the nonlinear system (NLTSA approach). In terms of graphical representation, NLTSA 2D projections generated more clusters than the PSA plots, thus, it was interpreted that NLTSA revealed more details about the nonlinear dynamic system associated with electrical tree growth. On the other hand, using the NLTSA approach, the correlation dimension was estimated to characterize the electrical tree growth. The results showed a different evolution obtained for VLF excitation compared to the results reported for test samples aged at industrial frequency in other studies. - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Publication Application of meta-heuristic approaches in the spectral power clustering technique (SPCT) to improve the separation of partial discharge and electrical noise sources(2019-01-01); ;Poblete, Nicolás MedinaIn order to achieve an adequate diagnosis of the insulation system in any electrical asset it is necessary to carry out a proper separation process after measuring partial discharges (PD), since during the data acquisition it is very likely that simultaneous PD sources and electrical noise have been measured. Clearly, such separation will simplify the subsequent identification process, because the analysis will be done individually for each of the sources and not over the total of the signals. In this sense, the Spectral Power Clustering Technique (SPCT) has proven to be an effective technique when separating multiple sources acting simultaneously in a monitoring process. The effectiveness of this separation technique is fundamentally based on the proper selection of frequency bands or separation intervals, where the spectral power of the pulses is different for each source. In the case of selecting the wrong bands, the clusters will overlap, hiding the presence of the total number of sources. This research evaluates the performance of different meta-heuristic algorithms when applied to the SPCT for selecting separation intervals. The results obtained from the measurements made in different test objects will allow determining the most appropriate technique for separating PD sources and electrical noise acting simultaneously over an insulation system.Scopus© Citations 8 - Some of the metrics are blocked by yourconsent settings

Publication Artificial Generation of Partial Discharge Sources through an Algorithm Based on Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Networks(2020-01-01); ;Ortiz, Jesus Eduardo; ;Muhammad-Sukki, FirdausBani, Nurul AiniThe measurement of partial discharges (PD) in electrical equipment or machines subjected to high voltage can be considered as one of the most important indicators when assessing the state of an insulation system. One of the main challenges in monitoring these degradation phenomena is to adequately measure a statistically significant number of signals from each of the sources acting on the asset under test. However, in industrial environments the presence of large amplitude noise sources or the simultaneous presence of multiple PD sources may limit the acquisition of the signals and therefore the final diagnosis of the equipment status may not be the most accurate. Although different procedures and separation and identification techniques have been implemented with very good results, not having a significant number of PD pulses associated with each source can limit the effectiveness of these procedures. Based on the above, this research proposes a new algorithm of artificial generation of PD based on a Deep Convolutional Generative Adversarial Networks (DCGAN) architecture which allows artificially generating different sources of PD from a small group of real PD, in order to complement those sources that during the measurement were poorly represented in terms of signals. According to the results obtained in different experiments, the temporal and spectral behavior of artificially generated PD sources proved to be similar to that of real experimentally obtained sources.
