Sanitation systems play a fundamental role in protecting public health and the environment. However, many cities still operate with combined sewer systems, infrastructure designed to convey both wastewater and stormwater to treatment plants. Although this type of system adequately met the needs of urban development at the time it was built, it now faces significant challenges due to urban growth, increasing impervious surfaces, and the greater frequency of rainfall events, all of which increase the flows that must be conveyed and treated. The city of Villarrica reflects this situation. Part of its wastewater collection network still operates with combined sewers, which receive significant stormwater inflows during rainfall events, considerably increasing the hydraulic load on the system. As a result, the sanitation infrastructure operates under more demanding conditions, increasing the risk of sewer overflows, the consumption of treatment resources, and the potential environmental impacts on Lake Villarrica, one of the municipality’s most important natural, recreational, and tourism assets. In response to this context, the objective of this research was to characterize the impact generated by the operation of the combined sewer system on the sanitation system of the city of Villarrica and to propose solutions aimed at improving its hydraulic, operational, environmental, and economic performance. To achieve this objective, a methodology was developed that integrated a review of technical and scientific literature, the collection of historical operational data from the water utility, the characterization of the existing infrastructure, hydraulic analysis of the network, the identification of relevant stakeholders, and the application of a mathematical model adjusted to the actual operating conditions of the Villarrica Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). The analysis showed that (...).en_US
