This research explores the performance of a thermal and magnetic engine, based on an effective interacting-spin model known as the $q$-state Clock model (an extension of the Ising model). The Hamiltonian is redefined to include an exchange interaction $J$ and coupling to an external magnetic field $B$ (within a scalar $\phi^4$ field theory framework), expressed in energy units. The thermodynamics for $q = 2, 4, 6, 8$ "clock" states on a square lattice of size $L = 3, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256$ are analyzed using mean-field theory; this approach involves redefining the effective spin in terms of an order parameter $m$ (related to the magnetization $M$) while neglecting second-order fluctuations. We revisit the classical Otto cycle, defining thermal reservoirs such that the processes in thermal equilibrium occur between ordered and/or disordered phases identified in the phase diagrams. The performance of the magnetic engine is evaluated in terms of the net work delivered to the surroundings and its efficiency. For a $3 \times 3$ lattice with non-interacting boundaries, the results obtained via mean-field theory are compared with those derived from an exact calculation of the energy of all possible microstates ($q^{L \times L}$). Furthermore, an expression is proposed to constrain the number of effective nearest neighbors, $z_{\text{eff}}$, as a function of the lattice size, by minimizing the difference between the exact internal energy and the mean-field approximation. The Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition is observed for $q > 5$ in our $q=6$ and $q=8$ clock models. With low- and high-temperature reservoirs ($T_l = 0.6$ and $T_h = 6.0$) and an external magnetic field ($B_l = 1.0$ and $B_h \in \{1.1, \dots, 4.0\}$ in increments of $0.1$, in energy units), we find that the $q=4$ model performs best. The cycle efficiency is proportional to the spin's degrees of freedom—that is, to the value of $q$. Comparing the work and efficiency values obtained via exact methods versus the mean-field approximation, we find that the latter yields lower results. When comparing net work per spin and efficiency across different lattice sizes, the smallest system size studied, $L=3$, emerges as the upper limit.en_US
